ANC mayor wants new R1 million luxury SUV after crashing 6-month old Merc – DA
The Democratic Alliance in Matlosana claims that ANC mayor Maetu Kgaile wants to buy a new R1 million SUV after her driver crashed a 6-month old Mercedes Benz.
The City of Matlosana – formerly City Council of Klerksdorp – is a local municipality in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, North West Province.
“The mayor’s Mercedes Benz was involved in a car accident six months after its purchase and now the ANC in Matlosana is requesting that R1 million be shelled out from the municipality to buy the Mayor a new BMW X5,” said Matlosana DA Councillor, Patrick Sesana.
The price for a new BMW X5 starts at R974,100, rising up to R1 348 700.
He called on the Matlosana Municipal Public Accounts Committee to investigate the circumstances that led to Kgaile’s official car getting into the accident.
The DA now demands to know the following:
- Was the mayor on official mayor duty at the time of the accident?
- Why is there no medical report into accident damage or injuries sustained?
The DA said that since the accident the mayor has made use of a leased luxury car and the bill for this lease being paid by the municipality is mounting up, but is not being disclosed by the Mayor’s office.
Kgaile celebrated her appointment as mayor with a R200,000 inauguration party in September last year, although the DA claimed the budget was closer to R1 million.
“Inauguration is not something new, it is an ancient way of inducting a leader into the system by communicating intentions, mission, values and strategies to the community at large. The inauguration committee budget plan was presented before council, subjecting the plan for approval.
I can allude that the inauguration committee is continuing with preparations for the event and that the budget is less than R200 000,” Kgaile said.
