MTN scoops Guinea 3G licence
MTN Group has this month secured a 3G licence in Guinea through a signature of a concession agreement with the licensing authorities.
The group said that by obtaining this licence, MTN Guinea is the first mobile company in the West African country to have a 3G concession agreement.
This licence would enable MTN Guinea to have a greater number of sites covered by March 2014, while also providing “access to high speed internet (broadband) and at a low cost”.
“This licence represents a huge opportunity that will allow us once again to align ourselves with our new vision which is to offer a digital world to our customers,” said CEO of MTN Guinea, Phumzile Joshua Phike.
MTN says it had 2.27 million subscribers in Guinea as at December 2012, and a market share of 75% in a country with 11 million people, having launched in the country in 2006.
Earlier this year, MTN lost out on a much sought-after telco licence in Myanmar, in South East Asia, however, the group continues to be active in Africa, having secured a value-added licence in Ethiopia.
The group is also believed to have expressed interest in expanding into Madagascar through an acquisition of Telecom Malagasy SA.
