 ·5 Jun 2021

The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) has announced its 2021 car of the year finalists across nine different categories.

Besides the overall winner’s crown, the finalists can also win one of nine categories:

  • Budget
  • Compact
  • Family Compact
  • Family
  • Premium
  • Performance
  • New Energy
  • Adventure SUV
  • Double Cab

Hyundai and Toyota currently lead the rankings with each boasting four models on the finalist list. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Suzuki have two finalists each.

The SAGMJ said that the Compact Family category is expected to be the most competitive, with different finalists this year. However, no vehicles were chosen for the Luxury category.

“The final round of scoring will commence shortly and continue until 11 June 2021, where far more detailed scoring will be done on the vehicles. This round of scoring also includes automated factors based on sales data,” it said.
