In this Business Talk with Michael Avery interview, Kershen Pillay discusses how the Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS) tackles new educational challenges, as well as the Global Goals 2030: Africa Scholarship.

Pillay is the CEO of GIFS and has helped shape the company into the South African financial services education powerhouse it is today.

He became the company’s CEO at only 27 years old and oversaw its rebranding from Masifunde Training Centre to GIFS in 2019.

Thanks to the skill with which he has guided the company, Pillay was recently named a TYI Top 100 Young African Innovator and won the inaugural Future of Work Visionary Award at the Future of Leadership Summit.

Additionally, Pillay received a Certificate of Recognition for Moral Courage from the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) for his unwavering commitment to ensuring fairness in the financial services education sector.

GIFS is also one of the delivery partners of the Global Goals 2030: Africa Scholarship.

The interview

He notes how GIFS and the Global Goals 2030 Africa Scholarship plan to address the disparity between Africa’s fast-growing youth population and the substantial skills development problem – noting what he’d advise prospective students to do when choosing their academic routes.

Pillay also touches on GIFS’ recent announcement that it will continue its global expansion, before explaining how the company is approaching new technologies such as AI.

He concludes the interview by sharing how GIFS ensures its students are all offered a path to becoming impactful global citizens.
