New international car brand taking over dealerships across South Africa
Indian automotive giant Tata Motors has rapidly expanded its dealership network and passenger vehicle line-up in South Africa in less than a year.
While Tata’s commercial (truck-focused) division, Tata International South Africa, has been in the country since the early 1990s, the passenger vehicle subsidiary exited the market in 2019.
That changed last year when Tata relaunched its passenger car business in August 2025 with a fresh range of hatchbacks, crossovers and SUVs aimed at a broad spectrum of buyers.
Since its return, Tata now has 45 dealerships across the country and plans to grow this number to 50 by the end of the year, covering all major metros as well as smaller towns.
“The introduction of the Tata brand and our model range has been so well received by the public and dealers alike that we have been able to exceed our target of 40 dealers in the first year, within six months,” said Daphne Greyling, General Manager of Dealer Sales.
Greyling said the company intends to maintain this momentum. “Momentum is everything, and we will continue to expand our dealer network in strategic locations around South Africa, along with the right dealer partners,” she added.
The growing dealer footprint represents a significant investment in the local market and signals Tata’s long-term commitment to South Africa.
Each dealership has been fitted with the company’s updated corporate identity, reflecting the modern design language the brand has adopted globally.
Dedicated staff at these outlets have undergone extensive product training to ensure consistent service standards nationwide.
Importantly for safety-conscious buyers, all of its current passenger cars hold four- or five-star ratings under the Global and Bharat New Car Assessment Programmes (GNCAP and BNCAP).
The company said its South African line-up will similarly emphasise high safety ratings, while balancing affordability, practicality and modern features.
Strategic models launched

While Tata Motors South Africa has yet to complete a full year of retail sales for its new passenger range, the company noted that it is already gaining market share in the segments in which it competes.
Its initial four-model offering provided coverage of a substantial portion of the passenger car market.
“Our initial four model offering gave us a passenger car market coverage of 76% and the addition of the Nexon and Sierra will increase that figure to 85%,” said Greyling.
“This means that our model offering caters to most segments and price points of the South African market.”
“Along with an extensive dealer network across South Africa, we are well-positioned to reach our market share goals.”
Tata has also confirmed that two additional models—the Nexon and the Sierra—will arrive in local dealerships during 2026.
These additions are expected to broaden the brand’s appeal and enhance its competitiveness in the fast-growing crossover and SUV segments.
Supporting the brand’s renewed push is TataMove, a customer-focused ecosystem that bundles warranties, nationwide service coverage, spare parts support, mobility solutions and OEM-certified repairs into a single value proposition.
