Chinese technology giant launches in South Africa

 ·18 Feb 2026

Haier, the world’s largest home appliance brand, has officially launched in South Africa as part of its global expansion.

The Chinese appliance giant has held onto its top global ranking by Euromonitor International for 17 consecutive years.

Haier South Africa’s General Manager, Xinliang Sun, said the company aims to combine globally proven technologies with locally tailored products and services for local consumers.

Founded in 1984, Haier has established six major industrial segments: Smart Home, Comprehensive Healthcare, Digital Economy, Robotics, New Energy, and Automotive.

Haier Smart Home is listed among the Fortune Global 500 and the Fortune World’s Most Admired Companies, achieving global revenues of $55.9 billion in 2024, with global profit of $4.2 billion.

The company said that South Africa represents a strategically important market within Haier’s global expansion.

It said that South Africa has seen ongoing urban development, increasing household electrification and a growing demand for energy-efficient and reliable home appliances.

The company noted that consumer preferences are growing toward smarter living solutions and higher-quality home experiences, with high expectations for product performance and after-sales service.

The following products will be available in Haier’s initial product range through major South African retailers:

  • Smart inverter refrigerators,
  • High-efficiency washing machines
  • Smart air conditioners
  • AI premium viewing television sets and other small appliances

The brand said that it will also establish a new comprehensive after-sales service system in South Africa.

This will include a national service network, authorised installers in major metropolitan areas, a 48-hour response target, availability of spare parts, and extended warranty options.

Already bought a South African company

While the Haier brand has now launched in South Africa, the company began making an impact in the country in 2024 after acquiring water-heating provider Kwikot.

Founded in 1903, Kwikot sells electric, solar, and gas water heaters, heat pumps, and more.

The deal formed part of a larger deal where Haier announced it would acquire 100% equity in the Swedish-based Electrolux Group’s South African subsidiary.

Electrolux South Africa Proprietary Limited owned Kwikot, and the sale to Haier had an enterprise value of R2.45 billion.

Jiangyong Guan from Haier said that the group was committed to assisting Kwikot with its continued growth at the time the deal was announced.

“Haier doesn’t just acquire companies, we invest in their heritage, employees and long-term success. Kwikot’s remarkable history and market leadership are a testament to its exceptional team and customer trust,” said Guan.

“By combining our global expertise in smart and sustainable solutions with Kwikot’s strong local network and legacy, we’re poised to deliver transformative growth and innovation tailored to South African homes and beyond.”
