Big work from home shift in South Africa

After a wide push to get South Africans back into the office after Covid-19, new data shows that work-from-home offers have reached an all-time high in the first half of 2026.

This is according to Pnet’s latest Job Market Trends Report, which found that work-from-home positions have expanded beyond the technology sector and are now becoming common across a broad range of industries.

The report is based on recruitment data from Stepstone Group South Africa’s online recruitment platforms, which have a combined database of more than 11 million registered users.

According to Pnet, remote work has moved from being a temporary workplace trend to becoming an established feature of South Africa’s labour market.

It noted that while flexible working arrangements initially gained traction in technology-related occupations, they are now spreading across industries as businesses continue to digitise their operations and adopt new ways of working.

“The latest Pnet data shows that remote work opportunities have reached their highest level to date,” the report said.

Although remote positions still account for a relatively small share of South Africa’s overall job market, their growth has been significant.

During the first six months of 2026, the number of remote job opportunities increased by 28% compared with the same period in 2025.

Looking at a longer timeframe, remote employment opportunities have grown by 41% over the past two years.

Pnet said the figures show that flexible work is no longer limited to a handful of specialist technology roles.

Instead, employers across a growing number of industries are using remote work to attract skilled employees, broaden access to specialist talent, and meet changing workforce expectations.

While Information Technology remains the biggest source of remote job opportunities, other industries are now experiencing even faster growth.

Remote IT roles increased by 44% over the past two years, continuing the sector’s leadership in flexible work.

However, Finance has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors, with remote opportunities increasing more than fourfold since 2024.

Business & Management, Sales, and Admin, Office & Support have also recorded strong growth, with a broader move towards hybrid and remote work across professional services and business operations.

According to Pnet, Marketing as well as Design & Media have both doubled the number of remote positions over the past two years as digital-first business models continue to reshape the workplace.

The report said these changes demonstrate that remote work is no longer confined to specialist occupations but is becoming a mainstream recruitment strategy.

“Remote work is becoming an increasingly important recruitment and talent attraction strategy across a wide range of industries,” Pnet said.

At an occupational level, software developers, systems administrators, business analysts and IT project managers continue to dominate remote employment.

However, flexible work arrangements are becoming increasingly common across sales, finance, management, administration, marketing and creative roles as more business functions become digitised.

Pnet said this reflects a broader transformation in how organisations structure work and recruit employees.

“Remote work has become a strategic recruitment tool that enables organisations to access wider talent pools and compete for scarce skills,” the report said.

The company added that advances in digital collaboration, cloud-based systems and virtual communication are making remote work practical across an expanding range of occupations.

It added that employers who embrace flexible working arrangements may be better positioned to attract specialist skills, expand their recruitment reach and remain competitive in an evolving labour market.

For job seekers, the report said the trend means work-from-home opportunities are becoming increasingly available across a much wider range of professions, offering greater flexibility and opening up career opportunities beyond the traditional office.
