We bought the 1kg ‘Avozilla’ from Woolworths – this is how big it really is
Woolworths has started selling a limited-edition Avozilla, and BusinessTech decided to see if it was truly a monster.
The massive Avozillas are available at selected stores across Gauteng and the Western Cape. We were able to find the limited-edition fruit at our local Woolworths in Gauteng.
As the name suggests, Avozilla is an extra-large avocado. Its size is the result of unique genetics and ideal growing conditions in Limpopo.
When it comes to taste and texture, Woolworths said that is exactly what customers should expect from an avocado, just a lot more.
Unfortunately, we could not taste the avocado, as the one purchased was still rock-hard and came with a note to keep it at room temperature to ripen.
The extra-large avocados are a varietal originally discovered in the Duiwelskloof area of Tzaneen.
Woolworths said that it had been in development and evaluation for several years before finally reaching Woolworths Food Stores in 2026.
The varietal has a late mid-season harvesting window, typically from late July to August, making it available for only a few short weeks.
“Our country is home to some of the best avocados in the world, and we’re pleased to offer our customers even more of the fruit they love,” said CEO of Woolworths Food, Chan Pillay.
“A huge number of customers, particularly on social media, have contacted us asking where they can get their hands on Avozilla, and this excitement is precisely the kind of innovation and joy we love bringing to South Africans.”
Each Avozilla retails for R59.99 and is available as a limited release while stocks last.
The Avozilla that BusinessTech purchased definitely lives up to its name and is absolutely massive, about five times the size of a regular avocado, with a very pronounced neck.
It is far larger than a host of office items that we quickly gathered, including 330ml cans, bananas and tissue boxes.
It’s roughly the height of a 500ml water bottle and covers around 50% of the screen of a MacBook Air 13”.
