South African billionaire Johann Rupert is about to make a killing
Remgro, which is controlled by South Africa’s richest family, the Ruperts, has told shareholders to expect a bumper earnings report this year.
In an announcement on Friday (11 September), the group said it expects its headline earnings to rise between 37% and 47% for the year ending June 2026.
It advised shareholders that headline earnings per share for the period will be between R19.30 and R20.71, compared with R14.09 reported in the prior period.
The increase in headline earnings is mainly driven by stronger operational performances across Remgro’s key investee companies, it said.
However, the group has also been boosted by material one-off items at certain investee companies, which contributed to the growth.
Adjusting for these material once-off items, headline earnings are still expected to increase by between 24% and 34%.
Remgro’s history dates back to the founding of the Rembrandt Group by Anton Rupert. Anton’s son, Johann, is now the company’s chair and the nation’s richest man.
In 1988, Rembrandt underwent a major split, with its international assets spun off into Richemont. The South African assets were kept in Remgro.
The Rupert family holds all the unlisted B shares in the company, which gives them over 40% control of the company.
Remgro’s other major holdings include Mediclinic, OUTsurance, Seacom, the Blue Bulls, Heineken, Rainbow Chicken and many more.
The group made two significant moves in the 2026 financial year, including taking full control of Mediclinic Holdings’ Southern African business, giving the company ownership of around 50 private hospitals across South Africa and Namibia.
The company also completed the sale of its remaining stake in FirstRand, which the group deemed a non-core investment.
Remgro acquired a direct stake in FirstRand following the unbundling of its RMB Holdings interest in June 2020.
It previously had a direct exposure to FirstRand of 3.92% of the bank’s market cap, but started selling this down over the last few years. It completed the sale in April 2026.
The group will publish its results on 21 September 2026.
