This South African has been named among the top 25 CEOs in the world
A South African-born executive has been listed among the world’s top 25 CEOs in the latest Harvard Business Review ranking – which assesses chief execs on how much value they add to companies during their tenure.
Estcourt born Mark Bristow, is the long-serving CEO of Randgold Resources – a position he has held since 1995 when he co-founded the company. He ranks 23rd in the HBR list of world’s 100 best-performing CEOs.
Bristow graduated from the University of Natal with BSc and PhD degrees in Geology. He manages a company with revenues exceeding $1.094 billion, and a market cap of $7.85 billion.
The chief executive received a salary of $7.7 million (R109.8 million)for the 2015 financial year, including a bonus of $2.95 million (R42 million).
The CEO has ensured that Randgold has survived the recent downturn in commodity prices better than most.
He told the Telegraph earlier in the year: “We are the only gold company on this planet of any size that hasn’t impaired.
The entire premise of the ranking is to assess CEOs on the results they bring to their respective companies – something which should be based on objective data and not on opinions.
To this end, the ranking was compiled by looking at chief executives within the S&P Global 1200 companies, and the analysis of the returns they give to shareholders, and how they impact their company’s market capitalisation in applicable years between 1995 and 2016.
The list excludes CEOs who have only been in the job for less than two years, or have been convicted or arrested in the past. This leaves 895 CEOs and co-CEOs from 886 companies.
According to the Harvard Review, on average, the world’s 100 best CEOs have been on the job for 17 years – and have generated a 2,091% overall return on their stock (adjusted for exchange-rate effects), or a 20.2% annual return.
The top-ranking CEO in world is pharmaceutical group, Novo Nordisk’s chief executive, Lars Revien Sorensen, who has maintained the top position for the second year in a row now.
