Here’s how the Starbucks rewards system will work in South Africa
Starbucks has launched its popular rewards programme in South Africa, allowing customers to redeem rewards for their purchases, and also pay at select stores through the Starbucks mobile app.
Starbucks Rewards has two levels, Green and Gold, with each tier offering value-added benefits to customers.
Here’s how it works:
- Customers start on the Green level and earn one star for every R2 spent.
- When customers have earned 250 stars, they unlock rewards such as free handcrafted beverages and food.
- Members can also enjoy exclusive offers such as early access to seasonal beverages.
- To get to the Gold level, customers need to earn 750 stars when they can access even more benefits, like free coffee on their birthday, free refills on freshly brewed coffee and tea, as well as invitations to member-only events.
In effect, customers need to spend R500 to unlock rewards, and R1,500 to move up to gold level.
Customers can join the programme by registering directly on the app or through a Starbucks card available from stores.
The company also introduced its mobile app, which offers a complete cashless payment system, which allows customers to pay for purchases using a “shake and pay” feature.
The ‘digital card’ part of the app can be topped up with a credit card, while other features such as a store locator (with an option to hail a cab directly though the app) and a rewards tracker are also included.
The app is available for both Android and iOS users.
Starbucks launched in South Africa in April 2016 with two main branches in Sandton and Mall of Africa. A third branch was opened in Menlyn Maine in Pretoria in September 2016.
Taste Holdings, the Starbucks brand owner in South Africa said it plans to open 16 more outlets in the coming years.
