Most expensive resort ever built in South Africa rocked by serious allegations

Club Med’s flagship South African resort, the most expensive resort ever built in the country, has been hit by serious allegations less than a month after welcoming its first guests.

The luxury resort at Tinley Manor on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast officially opened on 4 July 2026 following a development costing just over R2 billion.

However, its launch has now been overshadowed by a criminal investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving an employee and an international guest.

A 35-year-old employee of the newly opened resort has reportedly been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old Canadian tourist who was on holiday in South Africa.

According to a Weekend Argus report, speaking to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, the alleged incident took place at the Tinley Manor resort on Wednesday, 22 July.

Police said the complainant alleged that the employee offered him a drink while they were at the resort, after which he became dizzy and the alleged assault took place.

The suspect, who worked as a host paid to socialise with guests as part of Club Med’s all-inclusive holiday experience, was arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) the following morning.

The accused has denied the allegations, claiming the encounter was consensual and initiated by the teenager. He remains in custody and is expected to apply for bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Club Med told the Argus that it was treating the matter with the utmost seriousness while cooperating with authorities.

Because the matter is before the courts, Club Med said it would not provide further comment.

South Africa’s largest hospitality investment since Sun City

The allegations come shortly after the completion of one of South Africa’s largest tourism developments in decades.

Developed through a partnership between Club Med and the Collins Residential Consortium, the project was funded entirely by South African investors. Construction began in early 2024 and took 28 months to complete.

The R2-billion development is regarded as South Africa’s largest hospitality investment since Sun City and combines a luxury beachfront resort with the company’s new Vikela Safari Lodge to offer an integrated “beach and bush” holiday experience.

The beachfront resort features 411 accommodation units, including 310 Superior rooms, 35 Deluxe rooms and 66 premium Exclusive Collection suites.

The all-inclusive model covers accommodation, meals, beverages and a wide range of recreational activities.

Facilities are designed for both families and couples, with dedicated children’s clubs catering for infants from four months old through to teenagers.

Guests can also take part in activities including sailing, surfing, snorkelling, diving, tennis, padel, archery and circus and trapeze experiences, while the property also includes multiple swimming pools and a 500-seat convention centre for conferences and business events.

The resort’s pricing is broadly in line with Club Med’s Mauritius offering. A five-night stay for two adults costs about R47,000, while a family of four would pay about R59,478.

Guests can also pay extra for sea-view rooms, Deluxe accommodation, airport transfers and premium Exclusive Collection suites, with the latter costing more than R89,000 for a five-night stay.

The separate Vikela Safari Lodge is located within the 18,000-hectare private Mpilo Game Reserve, around four-and-a-half hours from the beachfront resort.
