MTN Business recently completed an R80 million enhancement of its Gallo Manor data centre, situated in Johannesburg.

Apart from various improvements to the data centre, The Gallo Manor expansion also sees the total footprint size of the data centre sitting at 2000m2 – with another 500m2 earmarked for expansion.

Better power

The MTN Business Gallo Manor DC was plagued by power problems over the last two years, but the company is confident that this is something of the past.

“The entire electrical system has been upgraded in such a way that there is much more resilience and much more control over the building as a whole. Electrically, the data centre is not the same facility,” said Edwin Thompson, general manager of technology and infrastructure at MTN Business.

“An additional redundant diesel generator set has been installed, and all racks are being fed power from 2(N+1) UPS sets, with sufficient battery backup,” the company said.

Cheaper bandwidth

MTN Business has also cut the bandwidth pricing for its data centre – made possible by more efficient systems.

“MTN Business continues with a combination of self-build and efficient leasing of underlying telecommunications capacity. As we are able to pass on savings or create more efficiency in the underlying infrastructures we pass these on to our customers,” said Thompson.

According to Thompson they are building new data centres as there is still market share to be had. “We have seen a higher demand from both the market and customers which we could tap into,” said Thompson.

Thompson added that while market share is important, MTN Business is focused on providing the customer with the continued “right price at the right time”.

Not worried about Teraco

The vendor neutral Teraco data centres have been making headlines because of its strong growth, but Thompson is confident that MTN Business will remain competitive.

“I do not feel we are losing significant business to vendor neutral parties, as there are different types of customers that look for such an environment,” said Thompson.

“We feel it is important to manage end-to-end services, as such, vendor neutral facilities remove a great degree of contour over the overall solution and could even add costs.”
