EY Sustainability – Sibanye-Stillwater’s Themba Nkosi discusses its ESG strategy

Themba Nkosi is the chief sustainability officer at Sibanye-Stillwater, a position he has held since May 2022.

Prior to working for Sibanye-Stillwater, Nkosi was the human resources director for PepsiCo’s sub-Saharan Africa region and also held several senior management positions at ArcelorMittal South Africa.

Nkosi moved to Sibanye-Stillwater in 2016 and was appointed executive vice president of human capital, before becoming the company’s chief social performance officer with a primary focus on South Africa.

In his current role as chief sustainability officer, Nkosi now focuses on leading the entire group’s ESG and sustainability strategy.

In this EY Sustainability interview, Nkosi talks about Sibanye-Stillwater’s ESG strategy and the challenges the company has faced over the years.

Nkosi explains what his current role entails and, based on his extensive experience in the field, he gives advice to businesses looking to embrace the social element of ESG.

He also talks about the Marikana tragedy in 2012, explaining how this tragedy affected Sibanye-Stillwater’s workers and highlighting how the company has provided support to those affected.
