Eskom has announced that it will be implementing stage 1 load shedding on Thursday (25 June), moving to stage 2 in the evening.

Stage 1 load shedding will be implemented from 15:00 – 16:00. Thereafter stage 2 load shedding will commence at 16:00 – 22:00.

The state utility is currently attending public hearings with the national Energy Regulator (Nersa), where it hopes to get an additional tariff increase.

Acting Eskom CEO Brian Molefe told the public hearing on Tuesday (23 June) that while Eskom had already been granted a 12.69% tariff increase for 2015/2016, Eskom desperately needed a further increase due to the new build delays as well as its ageing fleet.

Opposition to Eskom’s bid to increase electricity prices has mounted during the two days of public hearings held so far.

Experts, business leaders and politicians gave presentations to the Nersa panel, pleading for it to find alternatives to a further tariff increase.

Energy expert Chris Yelland told the panel that the price increase was worse than it seemed and would actually total 31.61%.
