Watch: taxi stunt goes horribly wrong
A new video has emerged on YouTube showing a taxi rolling onto its side with passengers still hanging out of the window.
The footage shows a number of taxis driving recklessly on a football pitch with passengers hanging out of windows and the boot of the vehicles.
One of the vehicles tries to spin out of reverse, but ends up on its side, before spectators rush to flip it back onto its wheels again to loud cheering.
South African minibus taxi industry is believed to be serviced by as many as 300,000 vehicles, transporting over 15-million commuters daily.
As such, the transport minister recently noted that taxis are one of the biggest causes of road deaths in the country. Fatal road traffic accidents increased by 11% between 1 December 2015 to 11 January 2016 – to 1,387, with minibuses accounting for 10.1% of all accidents.
In an interview with News24 in October, Eugene Herbert from driver safety company, Masterdrive, said that the majority of minibus taxi drivers in South Africa are better drivers than general road users.
Herbert inferred that taxi drivers were made to drive cars that were mostly unroadworthy everyday. He stressed that they weren’t necessarily safer drivers; however, he called for a mind shift when it comes to using the road in the country.
