Another Eskom load shedding warning

 ·16 Dec 2014

Power utility, Eskom has warned of further load shedding after it lost four power generating units on Tuesday (16 December).

“Eskom lost four power generating units this morning, increasing the risk of load shedding. Please switch off all non-essential appliances,” the group said.

Eskom’s acting spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said that the group lost a total of 3,000 MW after the generating units collapsed at three power stations.

Earlier this month, Eskom said that the prognosis for load shedding will be low to medium from 15 December 2014 until mid-January 15, “should no additional risks occur on the system”.

In November, a coal storage silo at the Majuba power station in Mpumalanga collapsed, resulting in widespread power cuts. The silo held more than 10,000 tons of coal and affected coal supplies to all six units at the power station.

Cabinet expressed concern over the disruptive effect the ongoing power outages and its impact on households and businesses across the country.

As a result, it said it would set up a ‘war room’ to oversee the implementation of a five-point plan to address the country’s power crisis.
