As many as 28 names on the ANC’s list of candidates for the local government elections in August either have criminal records or are facing charges, according to the Mail & Guardian.
One candidate in the Solomon Mahlangu branch in Alexandra, Chris Mabunda, is facing murder charges following the death of two Alexandra residents accused of stealing.
Mabunda worked as a security guard at the time of the murders. He is scheduled to appear in the Alexandra magistrate’s court next week.
The M&G noted further that Mabunda is also in the dock for alleged fraud after he was caught with original ballot papers during the 2014 elections.
ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe told the paper that the convictions among the party candidates ranged from assault to traffic fines.
“Their names were submitted despite ANC guidelines to the contrary and the likelihood that they will not be eligible for election,” M&G said.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is expected to screen the submitted candidates before making a decision. “We will not be shocked by anything that comes from the IEC,” said Mantashe.
“They will come back to us to say X number of candidates on your list are convicted,” he said.
