South Africa’s next president will not come from the ANC: Malema

 ·14 Feb 2017

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says that Kgalema Motlanthe can rescue the ANC from its political free-fall.

South Africa’s next election will take place in 2019 when the country will go to the polls to elect a new Parliament and new Provincial Governments.

Malema said at a press event in Braamfontein on Tuesday: “If I could choose, I’d choose Kgalema. Kgalema is closest to O.R Tambo. Kgalema can start a process of rebuilding ANC.”

However, he quickly added: “It doesn’t really matter who becomes president of ANC. In 2019 the president will not come from the ANC.”

Motlanthe served as president of South Africa between 25 September 2008 and 9 May 2009, following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki.

Motlanthe served as deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC), a position he held from 2007 until 2012, when he declined to run for a second term. At the 53rd ANC National Conference in Mangaung, Free State, Motlanthe ran for the position of president of the ANC, but was soundly defeated by Jacob Zuma, who won re-election.

“Parliamentary democracy doesn’t come from the ANC Women’s League,” Malema said. He said that the ANC WL told speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, that she would be president.

They then changed candidates and said Nkosazana Zuma. “What changed? They were bought by the Guptas,” Malema said.

He said that Dlamini-Zuma accepted a Gupta award and money, which she then said she would donate to charity. “How do you take corrupt money?”

“The ANC WL change of mind is informed by money. They were bought by Gupta money. They did a terrible thing to Baleka,” Malema said. “They promised her that when she chooses speaker over deputy president she will come back to be president.”

Malema, a former ANC Youth League leader, said that Mbete was now speaking to Mpumalanga premier, David Mabuza who is part of the so-called ‘premier league’ “so she can be part of his team”.

“There’s a big chance his team might win because they have money. David Mabuza is already seeing himself as president,” Malema said. “Mpumalanga is united,” he said.

The politician said that anyone who put money on current deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, wasted money. Malema said that Ramaphosa only has Gauteng and the province is divided. “Gauteng doesn’t win national politics,” Malema said.
