  • Koeberg concerns: Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is concerned over delays in Koeberg’s life-extension project as there are now risks of overlap between the delay of unit 1 returning to service and unit 2 going offline. He noted on Sunday (23 July) that he would be escalating the issue to Eskom’s board as he remains very worried about the situation. [Moneyweb]

  • VIP thugs arrested: Eight VIP protectors caught on video assaulting three civilians on a highway in Johannesburg earlier this month have been placed under arrest on Sunday (23 July). The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said the officers would be processed at the Sandton Police Station and are set to appear at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Monday. [702]

  • Fuel thieves behind bars: An Eskom senior shift supervisor at Matla power station and an oil tanker driver were arrested last week for the theft of heavy fuel oil and fraud. In a separate statement, Transnet reported on Friday that two people had been sentenced to hefty periods of 15 years in prison for fuel theft from the Durban to Johannesburg pipeline. It is estimated that R1 billion a month is lost due to such acts. [News24]

  • New Woman’s League President: Sisisi Tolashe is the new president of the ANC Women’s League. The former deputy minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities defeated former ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini by a huge margin of over 1,500 votes. [eNCA]

  • Markets:  South Africa’s rand lost some ground on Friday (21 July) as the U.S. dollar surged but still ended the week on a solid footing after inflation fell back within target and the central bank paused interest rate hikes. On Monday (24 July), the rand was trading at R17.99/$, R20/€, and R23.15/£. Brent crude is trading at $80.29 a barrel. [Reuters]
