SA Police raid City of Cape Town offices

The offices of two Mayoral Committee members in Cape Town have been raided.

JP Smith, the MMC for Safety and Security, and Xanthea Limberg, the MMC for water and sanitation, had their offices raided by the police.

The SAPS said that further investigations into tender fraud in the construction sector within the municipality resulted in SAPS Provincial Commercial Crimes investigators descending on the offices.

It said that their presence is part of a forensic investigation which emanates from a case that is currently running before the courts.

Several municipal officials and business owners are facing charges that relate to the same investigation.

Whether the investigations by the commercial crimes detective team will lead to arrests remains to be seen, with no arrests thus far.

“I note the raid by authorities at the offices of Mayoral Committee members JP Smith and Xanthea Limberg, who have informed me they’ve offered full cooperation to the SAPS but have not been made aware of the specific allegations at this stage,” said Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

“I’ve requested an urgent briefing from SAPS to understand the details of this matter and will determine the necessary further actions once this has been received.

“In the earlier matter relating to Malusi Booi, I was offered and given a full briefing by SAPS, and have requested the same courtesy be extended to me in this matter as soon as possible.”

Booi was recently arrested following allegations of tender fraud while he was MMC for Human Settlements.
