60 new branches where you can now play the Lotto in South Africa

The South African Post Office has partnered with the new operator of the South African National Lottery, Sizekhaya Holdings, to install dedicated Lotto terminals in 60 branches across the country.

According to the Post Office, the branches were selected based on transaction volumes and customer foot traffic and were just the first phase of a planned wider rollout.

Customers will be able to purchase National Lottery tickets, including Lotto, PowerBall, PowerBall Xtra and Daily Lotto.

The terminals accept cash as well as electronic payment methods.

SAPO CEO Fathima Gany said the partnership is part of the group’s strategy to diversify revenue and expand services.

The group recently exited business rescue after years of losses, becoming technically insolvent, and requiring billions of rands in state bailouts.

The business rescue process saw the business gutted, with section 189A retrenchment processes reducing the workforce by 4,342 employees, completed in April 2024.

A total of 366 branches were also permanently closed. 657 branches remain open, including strategically retained sites to serve rural communities.

However, the group has since started moving in the right direction.

Earlier in August, it received its first unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General in six years for its financial statements for the year ended March 2026.

In its audit report, the Auditor-General highlighted a material uncertainty regarding going concern, noting that SAPO continues to face significant challenges. 

These include declining demand for traditional postal services, pressure on revenue, reliance on government funding to maintain liquidity, uncertainty over the renewal of its exclusive postal license, ageing infrastructure and legacy systems, and limited access to external financing.

However, the new National Lottery partnership is a move to address at least some of these concerns.

Gany said the rollout represents the first phase of the partnership, with further expansion planned following an assessment of the initial branches’ performance.

SAPO and Sizekhaya are also engaging with a leading commercial bank to facilitate the payment of higher-value winnings through selected Post Office branches in future.

Participating branches will only be able to pay out National Lottery winnings of up to R2,000.
