Parliament secretary used blue lights for family: report

 ·19 Jul 2015

Parliament says that its secretary, Gengezi Mgidlana, uses a car fitted with blue lights to drive his  wife and child around, despite not being entitled to the service.

The Sunday Times reported that Parliament was forced to repair the blue-light Audi at a cost of R10,800 after it was damaged while transporting Mgidlana to one of his engagements.

Mgidlana, who earns a salary of more than R1.8 million, is not entitled to blue light as a service, the paper said.

It said that Mgidlana believed he was entitled to having blue lights, adding that his wife and child also received the service, while the secretary reportedly instructed drivers to go through red lights.

A spokesperson told the Sunday Times that it had no evidence of staff being instructed by Mgidlana to use blue lights, or drive through red traffic lights.

Head of security admitted however, that protection services staff drove the secretary to parliament only in extreme circumstances, namely if he had to transport confidential documentation.
