Women in tech: Why South Africa’s digital future needs more women building it

Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, software development and data analytics are changing the way we live and work.

As organisations across South Africa accelerate their digital transformation journeys, demand for skilled IT professionals continues to grow.

Recognising the growing importance of diversity in the technology sector, CTU Training Solutions spent August celebrating Women in Tech Month by highlighting the achievements, expertise and leadership of women working across its Information Technology faculty.

The initiative culminated in a Women in Tech online panel discussion that showcased a remarkable reality: every panellist was one of CTU’s own female technology leaders.

Representing specialisations including Cybersecurity, Software Development, Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence, CTU’s Programme Leaders and Senior IT Facilitators shared their expertise, personal experiences and insights into building successful careers in technology.

Their collective message was both simple and powerful: the future of technology will be stronger when more women participate in designing, developing and leading the technologies that are shaping our world.

Women in AI

One of the strongest themes to emerge from the discussion was the role women must play in the future of Artificial Intelligence.

As AI systems become increasingly integrated into education, recruitment, healthcare, finance and everyday business processes, the people responsible for building those systems directly influence how they operate.

The panel highlighted the risks of bias being embedded into AI solutions and stressed the importance of having diverse voices involved in their development, testing and governance.

“We need more women to code. We need more women to get on the technical side of things so that we can eliminate all the biases,” said IT Faculty Programme Manager Linda Dube.

The discussion also challenged misconceptions about careers in technology and what it takes to succeed in the field.

CTU’s Women in Tech panellists encouraged attendees to focus on continuous learning, practical experience and building confidence through recognised industry credentials.

International certifications have become a powerful way for professionals to validate their skills and differentiate themselves in a competitive job market.

This philosophy is embedded within CTU’s Information Technology qualifications, where internationally recognised certifications form part of the curriculum and course outcomes, ensuring graduates leave with both academic knowledge and industry-validated credentials.

“You don’t have to compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter ten,” said Cybersecurity Facilitator Simbulele Khonzani.

Adapting to new opportunities

As new technologies emerge and existing technologies evolve, adaptability and continuous learning have become as important as technical competence itself.

At CTU, these principles underpin several Information Technology study pathways available to students preparing for careers in the digital economy.

Opportunities exist across a wide range of specialisations, including:

  • IoT Specialist
  • Data Engineer
  • Programmer
  • Full-Stack Developer
  • Cloud Administrator
  • Computer Technician
  • Cybersecurity Analyst

These specialisations align with the skills increasingly sought by organisations adopting cloud technologies, AI solutions, advanced data platforms and cybersecurity frameworks.

The discussion also highlighted how technology has become embedded in almost every industry and profession.

Speakers noted that AI is already influencing everyday activities, from smartphone authentication and navigation systems to customer service, fraud detection and workplace productivity tools.

As a result, technical literacy is becoming increasingly valuable across virtually every sector and profession.

The event concluded with a practical challenge for aspiring technology professionals: start somewhere.

As Faith Muwishi summarised:

“You don’t need to begin by creating the next ChatGPT. Start with one Microsoft AI tool. One AI-901 module. One problem in your workplace. One small solution.”

For South Africa to remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy, the country needs more than technical skills.

It needs more people willing to pursue careers in technology, more professionals committed to continuous learning, and more women empowered to see themselves as software developers, cloud administrators, cybersecurity analysts, data engineers and future technology leaders.

CTU’s Women in Tech initiative served as a reminder that representation matters.

When students can learn from women who are already leading programmes, teaching emerging technologies and shaping the next generation of IT talent, the path into technology becomes more visible, more relatable and more achievable.

Because the future of technology should not simply be built for women.

It should be built by them.
