Waterfall City launches Waterbucks – The world’s first smart city rewards programme
Waterfall City has officially launched its revolutionary new Waterbucks initiative, the world’s first smart city rewards programme.
The launch event was held at Waterfall Wilds, and was attended by many of Waterfall City’s residents, retail partners and future partners.
At the event, Waterfall City offered guests a hands-on experience with the new rewards programme.
It credited each guest’s account with enough Waterbucks to enjoy a three-course meal with drinks, and we were impressed with how seamless the process was.
Below are our main takeaways from the launch event about the new rewards programme.
Full Waterfall City integration

The new rewards programme, developed in partnership with Pinnacle Rewards and Carlton One, allows anyone working, living, shopping, or visiting Waterfall City to earn Waterbucks by patronising local businesses and services.
These Waterbucks can then be redeemed at the same retailers, restaurants, and other businesses in Waterfall City.
The process is simple: you download the Waterfall App, create your account, and after accessing the Waterbucks feature, you will access a personal QR code.
Then, every time you pay for something, you scan the QR code to earn Waterbucks. When you want to redeem your Waterbucks, the business will again scan your QR code at the point of purchase.
You will also receive an email detailing the specifics of the transaction, ensuring you’re always kept informed on how your Waterbucks are being spent.
Thanks to the Go Waterfall App, the system is entirely cardless, and can be used throughout Waterfall City – supporting the programme’s goal of empowering those who work, live, or visit the smart city.
“Waterbucks is about more than rewarding purchases – it’s about creating a connected city,” said Sonja Fourie, COO of Pinnacle Rewards.
“By embedding rewards directly into the Waterfall City experience, we’re laying the foundation for how smart cities globally can use technology to drive engagement, strengthen communities, and deliver real value.”
The programme runs on Carlton One’s enterprise-grade loyalty and engagement platform, which offers users reliability and security on par with most banking apps.
This system also provides Waterfall City with valuable insights into how South Africans live, work, and spend money within the smart city, facilitating smarter urban planning and decision-making.
For residents of Waterfall City or any South African who frequents the smart city for work or leisure, the Waterbucks programme offers excellent value and is a must.
