South Africans were asking a lot of  ‘what’ and ‘how’ questions on Google SA this week.

The top trending question was ‘What is the Springboks game plan?‘, followed by ‘What is Eid Mubarak?” and ‘How many people died in 9/11?’

Sports was also on South African’s minds in search this week, with some 20 sports-related terms trending in search since Friday 9 September, out of a total of 47 trending search terms. Sports terms that trended included ‘Arsenal’, ‘Real Madrid’, ‘Springboks’, ‘paralympics’, ‘PSL’ and ‘English Premier League’.

Other trending search terms this week included ‘Winnie Mandela’ on Thursday 15 September with 2 000+ searches as she celebrated her 80th birthday, ‘Steven Anderson’, the pastor who was barred from entering South Africa due to his anti-gay stance, on Tuesday, and ‘VBS Mutual Bank’ which funded President Jacob Zuma’s R7.8 million home loan, trending on Monday.

This information is gleaned from from data collated by Google based on what South Africans have been searching for and asking Google this week. Google processes more than 40,000 search queries every second. This translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.
