Social networking giant Facebook appears to be hit by an outage of sorts with users reportedly unable to update their status or comment on others’ updates.

According to various reports, as well as numerous comments on social media site Twitter, users were greeted with the message “There was a problem updating your status. Please try again in a few minutes,” when trying to use massively popular social media site.

Facebook has a user base of nearly 1.2 billion people. It is not clear what areas are affected.

BusinessTech confirmed the error, while the Wall Street Journal also reported that, when using the iPhone app, a status message appeared to go through without error, but ultimately never published.

Website, isitdownrightnow.com – which pings websites to check whether they are reachable – shows that the Facebook site as a whole is up and running, but notes widespread reports of down-time.

Facebook didn’t immediately respond to BusinessTech’s request for comment.
