BitX, a Bitcoin exchange and internet financial services company, says South African users of the digital currency can now purchase airtime and data bundles.
BitX puts the exchange rate at 1 BTC = USD 262 (R3,190).
“With our smartwallet your Bitcoin is stored offline and securely, easily converted to other currencies and usable for global payments from buying things online to sending money to friends and family,” BitX said of its services.
BitX also provides a flexible API so that developers can build Bitcoin into their own apps and services, while its merchant services enable businesses to accept Bitcoin without exposing themselves to the volatility in exchange rates.
“With a few simple clicks, users can now top up their mobile phone airtime credit or buy data bundles from any of the South African mobile operators. These purchases can be paid for with either bitcoin or local currency,” the exchange said.
Airtime will be extended to the Android and Apple mobile apps in the coming weeks, followed by rollouts in its other active countries, BitX said.
