Superyachts owned by the world’s billionaires

 ·3 Apr 2016

Forbes has published a list of superyachts owned by some of the world’s prominent billionaires.

According to the Knight Frank Wealth Report for 2016, luxury yachts are one of the most popular assets among billionaires, particularly those in the Pacific and Europe.

“In a world where many ultra-high net worth individuals are cash-rich yet time-poor, yachting continues to provide the ultimate sanctuary for privacy and an opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends,” the report said.

In 2015, Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko upgraded his previous superyacht – a 120 metre beast valued at R4.8 billion – to an even bigger one (pictured above): a three-mast, 143 metre monstrosity worth R5.9 billion.

The current biggest private yacht in the world is the Azzam – a 180 metre ship commissioned by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates in 2013.

The yachts listed by Forbes are not notable for being the biggest or most expensive, but rather shine through because of who they belong to – some of the world richest, and most prominent business people.
