The best wildlife estates in South Africa
New World Wealth has updated its best wildlife estates in South Africa list for 2023.
Wildlife estates are not always easy to define, so New World Wealth looked at estates with large amounts of wildlife that allow people to buy private homes in the bush.
Despite mainly being concentrated in South Africa, wildlife estates are expected to take off in other countries over the next 10 years, including Namibia, Kenya, USA, Australia, Canada and Brazil.
New World Wealth said that wildlife estates can play an important role in wildlife conservation, especially Africa’s Big 3 Eagles, as the world’s wild spaces diminish.
The rating criteria for the list includes location, views and scenery, wildlife & birdlife experience, design and space, and maintenance.
New World Wealth’s top 10 wildlife estate picks for 2023 are found below:
Elephant Point
Elephant Point borders the Kruger National Park and is situated on the Sabie River.
Royalston
Just outside Port Elizabeth, the Royalston Coastal Wildlife Estate is a sanctuary for many rare species, such as the Sable Antelope, Gemsbok, Golden Wildebeest, Black Impala, Knysna Woodpecker, Crowned Eagle, Caracal and the Honey Badger.
Leopard Creek
Leopard Creek is a golf and wildlife estate near Malelane and the Kruger National Park. New World Wealth said that it is a hotspot for the wealthy, with its golf course considered one of the best in the world.
Gondwana Private Residences
Gondwana is a game reserve located near Mossell Bay that spends over 11,000 hectares, with private residences covering a small area of the reserve. It is the only Fynbos reserve in the world.
Mjejane
Mjejane is a 4,000-hectare game reserve located close to Leopard Creek. However, it has no fences with the Kruger National Park.
Leadwood
Leadwood Big Game Estate is located near Hoedspruit, Limpopo, where several large animals, including lions, elephants and rhinos, can roam between the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon.
Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate
A well-established wildlife estate with vast green belts. Tom Cruise recently stayed at the estate while filming.
Likweti
Likweti Bushveld Farm Estate is close to the White River. There is a regular bird walk by guide Marc Cronje. There are two-higher end lodges on the estate.
Raptor’s View
Also located in Hoedspruit, Raptor’s View is one of the oldest wildlife estates in South Africa and features over 200 species of birds.
Zandspruit Bush & Aero Estate
Zandspruit Bush & Aero Estate is also near Hoedspruit and features a private airstrip and seasonal riverbed flowing through the estate.
