80% local content for TV is next: Motsoeneng
SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng has vowed to keep the 90% local radio content policy going – and has set his sights on TV stations next, according to the City Press.
In an interview with the paper, the COO said that he will revamp the SABC 3 channel so that South African-produced content makes up 80% of everything aired at the station.
The SABC this week announced that it would play 90% local music across its 18 radio stations, starting 12 May 2016, going beyond what is required of it by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).
Holders of public sound-broadcasting service licences must play at least 60% South African music. Meanwhile, commercial stations are required to play a minimum of 35% South African music, according to Icasa.
The move has been described as risky by some commentators, as it could alienate existing audiences of some radio stations, such as 5FM.
However, Motsoeneng has down-played the risks, saying that taking risks is part of who he is. He said the target – for both TV and radio – will create jobs and promote local artists.
“If I fail good. At least I tried something special,” he told the City Press.
The 90% target will be in place for three months, but the COO says that it won’t just disappear. It will be reviewed, and the broadcaster will assist where it is needed.
