Zuma’s kids get rowdy on social media
Two of President Jacob Zuma’s children took to social media this past weekend to attack finance minister Pravin Gordhan and secretary-general Gwede Mantashe.
On Friday (3 February) Zuma’s son Edward claimed that Gordhan as well as deputy minister Mcebisi Jonas were deliberately withholding Treasury funds to halt spend on key government programmes.
In a follow-up post he also took aim at former president FW De Klerk and businessmen Sipho Pityana and Johann Rupert – which he claimed were helping to perpetuate “white monopoly capital” within the country.
“They are thieves who are sucking the wealth of this country using their relationships with these leaders who in return have business interests in almost everything that is profit making,” he said.
While Edward Zuma continued to trend on Twitter, his sister, Thutukile Zuma, also took to social media on Sunday (6 February) to criticise ANC head of communication Khusela Sangoni and secretary-general Gwede Mantashe for their recent statements condemning the ANC youth league.
The ANCYL had opened a criminal case against the former health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and called for Gauteng premier David Makhura’s resignation, after it emerged last week that 94 mentally ill patients had died under their care.
The ANC – through Sangoni – released a statement calling the youth league’s comments ‘atrocious, despicable and unbefitting not only members of the ANC but humanity at large’.
“In my view, Khusela (Sangoni)’s statement about the ANCYL Gauteng put the ANC into disrepute,” said Thutukile Zuma in a Facebook post.
“This is why un-elected officials should not be writing statements not be writing statements on behalf of real of real elected leadership and about elected leadership. It just puts us in a mess. Can we stop juniorising serious posts in the ANC.”
