Sunday newspaper City Press has topped its competitor, The Sunday Times, as the most influential media platform in South Africa, Beeld reported on Wednesday (12 June).

Media research institute, Media Tenor, compiled a list of the most influential media by analysing 2 422 quotes in various forms of local media between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012.

City Press built on progress made over the past three years to become the most quoted, or most influential medium in the South African media landscape, Media Tenor said.

The Sunday Times had dropped to second most influential newspaper, after six years in the top position.

According to Rieyaad Hartley, a researcher at Media Tenor, City Press editor Ferial Haffajee‘s approach to debates on Brett Murray’s controversial painting The Spear, and her comments on political issues, all contributed to the paper’s influence.
