Public protector subpoenas comms minister over SABC COO
Beeld has reported that public protector Thuli Madonsela has subpoenaed communications minister Faith Muthambi to appear before her to explain the appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as SABC COO.
According to the report, Muthambi ignored the public protector’s request to meet to discuss the appointment of Motsoeneng.
Motsoeneng was appointed permanently as the SABC’s chief operations officer in July 2014 despite the public protector’s report which advised against it.
In February 2014, Madonsela released a report “When governance and ethics fail” which found Motsoeneng’s SABC appointment irregular.
Among other things, his salary increased from R1.5 million to R2.4m in one year.
She found he had misrepresented his qualifications – that he passed matric – to the SABC, and recommended that he be replaced.
After his appointment, Madonsela began a new investigation into the issue, with a planned meeting for 10 July.
Muthambi’s subpoena to appear before the public protector, Beeld reported, is for 26 August.
