MTN fuelled terrorist group: Nigerian president
MTN “fuelled the Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria” by not disconnecting millions of unregistered users, according to Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari.
An AFP report on eNCA stated that mobile operators in Nigeria were ordered to disconnect unregistered SIMs by mid-2015. This was for security reasons.
MTN missed the deadline, which resulted in a R74-billion fine against the operator.
“The concern of the federal government was basically on the security, not the fine imposed on the MTN,” said Buhari at a recent press conference.
“You know how the unregistered GSM are being used by terrorists… That was why (the) NCC asked the MTN, Glo, and the rest of them to register GSM.”
He said MTN was “very slow” and subsequently “contributed to the casualties”.
Boko Haram violence has left at least 17,000 dead and forced more than 2.6 million from their homes since 2009, stated the report.
