Telkom mobile closes in on 4 million subscribers

Telkom on Monday reported a 38.4% jump in mobile service revenue to R3.50 billion for the ended March 2017.

Active mobile subscribers increased 47.7% to 3.999 million, comprising of 2.772 million prepaid users and 1.227 million post-paid users, the group said.

The prepaid and postpaid segments saw growth of 44.9% and 54.5% respectively over the past year, it said.

Mobile data revenue increased 49.6%to R2.356 billion, driven by a strategy to
focus on data which led to a 129.9% increase in mobile data traffic, Telkom said.

It said that its strong growth in active subscribers was as result of an expansion in its network, extension of its distribution channels, increased store footprint and innovative products launched during the year, including FreeMe (for individuals) and FreeMe Family (for families and small businesses).

Blended average revenue per user (ARPU) was stable at R89. “Our post-paid subscribers increased 54.5% to 1.2 million with an ARPU of R181 supported by FreeMe. Of our post-paid subscribers, 13% use FreeMe, of which 79% are new customers,” Telkom said.

Following the re-farming of its 1 800 MHz spectrum to extend its LTE offering to smartphones, the company observed a good growth of 45.7% in its smartphone base to 1.9 million units.

Telkom said its mobile broadband led strategy delivered a strong performance with mobile data revenue increasing 49.6% to R2.4 billion supported by an increase of 44.6% in mobile broadband subscribers to 2.6 million.
