Cell C’s latest subscriber numbers

Cell C currently has 9.4 million customers, and is signing up 700,000 new subscribers each month according to Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig.

However, it is currently not clear what Cell C’s net additions are as this is a figure which the company would not disclose.

When Knott-Craig took over as Cell C CEO in April 2012 he said he wanted to grow the mobile operator’s market share in South Africa to 25% within the next three years.

This essentially means that Cell C will have to double its current market share within three years – not an easy task considering that many high end subscribers are signed into contracts with Vodacom and MTN.

However, Knott-Craig has attracted a lot of attention in the local cellular space by slashing voice and data prices, and by introducing innovative new contract packages.

To date Vodacom and MTN have not responded to Cell C’s price moves in the voice space, which may assist Cell C to gain market share, especially in the price sensitive prepaid market.
