Cell C mum on management exodus
Cell C recently announced that former Vodacom CEO, Alan Knott-Craig, will join the company as the new chief executive. This follows the resignation of ex-CEO, Lars Reichelt.
Since Reichelt’s sudden departure in July 2011, there have been a slew of high-level resignations at Cell C – including Chief Information Officer, Ron Reddick; Executive Head of Marketing, Simon Camerer; and Sue Kennedy, Cell C’s executive head of sales.
Reichelt cited personal reasons for his sudden resignation, while Cell C’s ‘restructuring’ was blamed for the other departures.
There is industry speculation that some of these resignations were not voluntary departures, but rather forced resignations (that is to say, they had been fired).
Cell C chairman and acting CEO, Simon Duffy, would not comment on these departures.
When faced with questions as to whether some of the executives were fired as rumoured – and why we have seen so many high level resignations at the company – Duffy stated that they “want to focus on the future and not dwell on the past.”
These resignations make it easier for Knott-Craig, who will start as CEO at Cell C on 1 April 2012, to bring in his own management team.
Knott-Craig, however, told MyBroadband BusinessTech that he doubts that the management departures had anything to do with him taking over at the company.
Knott-Craig added that he will not actively try to entice Vodacom executives to join him, but that it would be “nice” if he could get some of the senior Vodacom staff to work under him.
