IT and business professionals in Africa are almost twice as likely to use an Apple iPad purchased by their employer than their global counterparts, new data suggests.

The iPad for Business Survey 2012, conducted by global research group IDG, found that 47% of Africa based respondents answered: “Yes, my iPad is supplied by my employer”, to the question – compared to 24% of respondents globally.

The survey is based upon telephone interviews with 210 respondents worldwide, which is a relatively modest number.

The IDG noted that African professionals, according to the data, 13% use their iPad for entertainment and personal communication less frequently than the norm, the lowest in the world.

Levels of iPad-based work communication are, however, higher than average, the data found.

When asked whether owning an iPad has led them to buy fewer newspapers or books, African respondents respond in ways that are similarly close to global norms. As many as 70% of Africa-based respondents said they purchased fewer newspapers, against a global average of 72%.

The data found that 11% of African professionals said they would consider buying a different tablet, moving away from the iPad in future.

Globally, 10% of the respondents surveyed say that their iPad has “completely replaced” a laptop. Over half say it has “partly replaced” their laptop.

Half of IT decision-makers say they ‘always’ use their iPad at work, while 79% say they ‘always’ use their iPads ‘on the move’.
