8ta is rumoured to be in discussions around prepaid SIM card distribution, which will focus on the consumer market.
According to a well placed industry source, 8ta may well partner with multiple parties to target different market segments, and boost their market share.
Telkom/8ta could not comment on the potential deal, saying that such discussions may be competitor-sensitive, and may not materialize.
“8ta continuously engages third parties on new products. 8ta is not in a position to discuss products that are in the concept phase as this is competitor sensitive and may not materialise beyond the conceptual stage,” Telkom said.
Telkom previously confirmed a deal with Blue Label Telecoms, which involved the distribution of 100,000 hybrid 8ta contracts – with R100 airtime per month.
“The performance of this deal more than exceeds 8.ta’s standard ‘Saver’ contracts, and the top-up value on average exceeds 40% of the contracted R100, without considering the incoming call interconnection benefit,” Telkom said.
