Take a look at Joburg’s ‘secret suburb’ with large homes and even bigger gardens

 ·16 Dec 2022

Forest Town in Johannesburg has stood the test of time and fought off densification and subdivision practices that result in fewer greener spaces for residents, says Beverley Gurwicz, the area specialist for Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty.

According to the area specialist, Forest Town is one of the few nodes that have retained their traditional character – boasting large erfs and original homes, priced exclusively in the upper-price brands.

“Located at the base of Parktown Ridge and adjacent to several of the city’s most desirable suburbs, Forest Town also offers excellent value in a high-value area, making it an excellent investment neighbourhood,” said Gurwitz.

It’s still possible to buy a spacious original house for between R3 million and R4 million and significantly increase the value of your investment through renovation.

“The suburb’s growing popularity and investment value is clearly evidenced by a 10.5% increase in the median house price this year (up from R3.8 million in 2021), despite the current economic climate and market downturn.”

“Forest Town has managed to maintain its village atmosphere and still has, by today’s standards, large homes and well-maintained, wide tree-lined streets.

“There are also very few remaining suburbs which are surrounded by parks and open green spaces and even fewer where residents can freely and safely utilise such areas.

Gurwitz said that in Forest Town, people can be seen walking, running and cycling around the suburb with their dogs and kids, especially over weekends when residents have time to stop off at one of the quaint local cafes for coffee or breakfast.”
