Iconic 7-star American hotel brand coming to South Africa
An iconic ultra-luxury American hotel brand is officially coming to South Africa, with Marriott International confirming plans to open The Cape Town EDITION at the V&A Waterfront in 2026.
The project will mark the debut of EDITION Hotels on the African continent and represents a significant milestone for both Marriott and Cape Town’s rapidly growing luxury tourism market.
Marriott International, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, is one of the world’s largest hotel groups, with a portfolio of more than 9,700 properties across over 30 brands in 143 countries.
Its EDITION brand sits at the very top end of the luxury spectrum and is known globally for modern and design-led hospitality.
With only 21 EDITION hotels currently operating worldwide, each opening is treated as a statement project, carefully placed in cities that align with the brand’s creative and cultural identity.
According to Karim Cheltout, Senior Vice President for Development in the Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, bringing EDITION to Cape Town is a natural fit.
He said the signing of the first EDITION hotel in Africa is a significant milestone in Marriott’s growth strategy on the continent, noting that Cape Town’s creativity, diversity and dynamic spirit strongly reflect the brand’s ethos.
Positioned within the iconic V&A Waterfront, the development is expected to set a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in South Africa.
The Cape Town EDITION is planned to feature 142 guest rooms and suites, along with a collection of world-class amenities aimed at both international travellers and high-end local guests.
These include a signature rooftop bar, a spa, a pool, and dedicated meeting and event spaces.
In addition to the hotel, the development will also include The Residences at The Cape Town EDITION.
Plans currently include six private residences that will carry the same design as the hotel. These residences are intended to introduce a new standard of luxury living in Cape Town.
These residences will be aimed at buyers seeking exclusivity, discretion, and direct access to one of the city’s most sought-after destinations.
What to expect

The architectural vision for the project will be led by Shanghai-based firm Neri & Hu, working in collaboration with local architects and designers StudioMAS.
David Green, Chief Executive Officer of the V&A Waterfront, said the development is an exciting addition to the precinct and a significant moment for Cape Town.
He noted that the city is privileged to join a select group of global destinations that host an EDITION hotel, adding that growing tourism demand makes the timing particularly strong.
Guests will have immediate access to luxury retail, leading restaurants, charter cruises, and a wide range of curated experiences within the Waterfront.
The hotel and residences will be located at the edge of the planned Granger Bay development within the V&A Waterfront, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest working harbours and among Africa’s most visited destinations.
The site offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, the City Bowl, and Cape Town’s most famous landmarks, including Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.
The surrounding precinct includes attractions such as Battery Park, a year-round events amphitheatre, superyacht facilities, a heliport, and a newly developed public promenade along the water’s edge.
With its arrival in Cape Town, the brand said it wants to reinforce the city’s position as a leading global luxury destination and introduce a new level of experiential hospitality to South Africa.
