Enough international bandwidth for now: Telkom CEO
Telkom CEO Nombulelo Moholi said that she did not see the company increasing its investment in submarine cables over the next two to three years.
Speaking at a 2012 SATNAC media event, Moholi said that Telkom had enough dormant capacity on its current cable systems – including SAT-3/SAFE, WACS and EASSy – to meet the company’s international bandwidth needs.
“Of course there can be a data explosion which will mean that we have to relook our strategy,” Moholi pointed out.
The West Africa Cable System (WACS) was launched on 11 May 2012, increasing South Africa’s international bandwidth capacity by 5.12Tbps and providing the country with another submarine cable system on the West Coast of Africa.
Many industry commentators share Moholi’s view that the current submarine cable systems landing in South Africa should serve the country’s international bandwidth needs for a few years to come.
