Gunter Engling has been appointed as managing director of Huge Telecom, with his appointment set to take effect on 1 April 2018 after he has served his notice period with mobile operator MTN.
Engling is a top level commercial and financial executive with 14 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, primarily with the MTN Group.
During his time at MTN, he has held a number of senior positions including acting group chief financial officer – responsible for group wide finance activities.
In April 2017 he was appointed as deputy group CFO, where he held primary responsibility for MTN Group’s core finance function.
During his 14 years with the MTN Group, Engling held the position of acting group CFO, chief executive officer: Rwanda, CFO: Ghana and the GM: Financial Planning: Nigeria, the MTN Group’s largest operation.
He has also led many significant commercial and finance initiatives at the MTN Group, including acting as the project lead on a tower sale for MTN Ghana while CFO in Ghana.
Engling earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting (Honours) and CTA from the University of Stellenbosch in 1994 and 1995 respectively. In 1996 he passed the Chartered Accountants Final Qualifying Examinations on his first attempt.
He went on to complete his articles at PWC, where he held various positions until he joined MTN in 2003.
