Telkom’s R100 million PSL sponsorship under fire

Telkom’s decision to sponsor the PSL to the tune of R100 million over 5 years amidst its decision to announce voluntary retrenchment packages for staff to cut costs is drawing criticism from some quarters.
The Sunday Times reported that the PSL sponsorship decision caused anger internally, but Telkom is defending the decision.
The newspaper reported that Telkom said in an internal Q&A to staff that sponsorships allow the company to reach a large audience of potential customers, which translates into commercial benefits for the company.
“People misconstrue sponsorships as charity money. Sponsorship of the PSL delivers an audience in a competitive environment,” Telkom’s Dominic Ntsele is quoted as saying.
Telkom is also sponsoring other sporting events like the PGA golf championship and the Telkom Knock Out Cup.
