Telkom CEO speaks out against fraud allegations

Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko has denied any intention to defraud any person or organisation.

Maseko appeared in court in Johannesburg on 3 July to explain allegations that he committed traffic regulation fraud.

This followed a report in The Star newspaper on 25 July 2014 that Maseko was at the centre of a City of Johannesburg metro police investigation into a car licence cloning scandal.

The newspaper reported that Maseko “stands accused of running up about R30,000 in traffic fines – to be paid by another driver”.

Maseko has now responded to these allegations, sending an email to Telkom staff.

Dear colleague,

You may recall media reports from last year where allegations were made regarding a license plate I once owned.

Today, for the first time, I have been formally presented with charges regarding this previous motor vehicle license plate. In the past year I have felt extremely frustrated by the lack of clarity regarding these claims which meant I was unable to resolve them. Having now received full discovery of the allegations being made, I am finally in a position to study the detail and will respond accordingly.

The three charges all relate to the license plate, one of fraud and two others related to the Road Traffic Act. I want you to know that I vehemently deny any intention to defraud any person or organisation. All necessary representations will be made to progress this matter.

I will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities so this matter may be correctly resolved. I will keep you informed of developments.

Best regards,
Sipho

In July Telkom responded to queries about the issue, saying that it is a matter “that is personal to Mr Maseko and is in no way related to Telkom”.

“As such, Maseko will deal with it in his personal capacity,” said Telkom.
