Watch: Maimane chased away from #FeesMustFall protest at UCT

 ·20 Oct 2015

DA leader Mmusi Maimane has been met with an icy reception from students protesting in the #FeesMustFall campaign at the University of Cape Town.

Students across the country are currently engaged in protest action at their respective universities, standing against proposed increases in fees for next year.

The demonstrations erupted at the University of the Witwatersrand last week, and quickly spread to other institutes across the country, including Stellenbosch, Rhodes and the University of Cape Town.

While Wits and other institutes moved to engage the students, UCT headed to court, where it was granted an interdict to stop students from blocking entrances and exits at the university – forcefully.

As the student uprising gained media attention, political parties, including the DA, sought to get involved.

DA leader, Mmusi Maimane headed to UCT to “engage with DASO” – the DA’s student organization – but was met with harsh words from the crowd.

According to protesters, the DA leader is trying to capitalize politically on the students’ struggle.

Maimane was “chased” away while talking to media, amid shouts of “leave!”, with some calling him a “f**king sell out”.

Protesting students at UCT have been met with stun grenades and as many as 40 students have been detained, with many others left injured.
