“Zuma Must Fall” banner torn down by ANC supporters

The massive “Zuma Must Fall” banner which was erected at the top of Long Street in Cape Town this week has been torn down.

According to reports, the banner was torn down by people claiming to be ANC members, all wearing the party’s colours.

Reaction to the tear-down has been divided, with many calling for the perpetrators to be brought to book for the act of vandalism – while others supported the move, particularly as the banner was said to be put up illegally in the first place.

Banner torn

The City of Cape Town on Friday said in a statement that the banner had not been approved by the city, and had broken a number of by-laws. The city said it would be prosecuting those responsible.

To date, no one has claimed responsibility for the massive banner, which is sitting in an advertising spot said to cost as much as R250,000 a month to rent.

Many had suspected the Democratic Alliance of bankrolling the politically-charged message, but the party has flat-out denied any involvement.

ANC Western Cape Chairperson Marius Fransman said the DA-led City of Cape Town should take responsibility for the billboard, as it was put up on its watch.

According to Eyewitness News, the company responsible for putting up the billboard said the poster was sponsored by a “private initiate” and constitutes freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, the DA says it will be taking ANC MP Bongani Mkongi to the Ethics Committee over his statements regarding the banner.

Mkongi controversially called for the banner, the building it is on – and its occupants – to be burnt down.

“The DA is deeply disturbed and disgusted by ANC MP, Bongani Mkongi’s calls for the ‘Zuma Must Fall’ billboard in Cape Town, as well as the building it is on and its occupants, to be burnt down,” Chief Whip John Steenhuisen said on Saturday.

“I will write to the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests and request that it investigates Mkongi’s remarks and conduct as a matter of urgency.”
