The DA’s Chief Whip in Parliament, John Steenhuisen, took the ANC to task during the State of the Nation debate this week.
Steenhuisen accused the attending ANC members of tossing a coin to defend Jacob Zuma, as the president looked on in the house. “But we did get some people out here, the B team, admittedly,” the DA member quipped.
ANC members were visibly upset with Steenhuisen as he ran through high ranking officials including minister of trade and industry, Rob Davies.
“When it comes to the ANC, they iron over the problems and steal all the money,” Steenhuisen said.
On Thursday Zuma criticized the behaviour of the members in Parliament, following several days mudslinging between opposition parties in the house.
“All of us should always keep in mind that our being here is not to satisfy our own feelings, but it is to represent the people who elected us,” Zuma said.
“I believe when we say honourable members, we mean it,” the president said.
“We can’t call ourselves honourable, but behave dishonourably. It’s not helping the image of the country, it’s not teaching our people what democracy is all about. I am talking to all members of Parliament,” Zuma said.
