SA bookmaker taking bets on Zuma getting the boot
Sportingbet, which claims to be the largest online sportsbook in South Africa, is taking bets on whether president Jacob Zuma will see out his term as leader of the country.
Zuma is in the spotlight again amid allegations of an attempted state capture in conjunction with the Gupta family, which has led to calls for the president to step down.
ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Sunday however, that the ruling party continues to confirm its full confidence in the president.
Zuma’s second term as ANC president will end in December 2017, while his term as state president ends mid 2019.
“We have priced up a novelty market owing to the past few weeks topical conversation around President Zuma seeing out his term,” said Sportingbet MD Tyrone Dobbin.
“Will Jacob Zuma See Out His Presidential Term? Jacob Zuma To Still Be President Of South Africa On 30th April 2019,” the bookmaker simply asks.
Sportingbet is giving odds of 8/11 that the president will see out his presidential term, and even money that he won’t.
“Time and again in the betting industry, we have seen industry analysts, pundits and commentators quite literally eat their words, particularly on specialised political markets,” Dobbin said, adding that predictions for something like the ‘Zuma’ market is difficult to pin down because political polling is not done at the same level as the US and UK.
“In the current climate, this market is a unique, and is is likely to get tongues wagging,” he said.
